In Maxim Gorky’s play *The Lower Depths*, the stage belongs to the humiliated, to those who have failed in life. People without a past, those who drown their sorrows in alcohol, those who have always been labeled as petty criminals. These failed, derailed, and down-and-out residents, excluded from bourgeois society, live together in cramped quarters in a slum and dream of a real life. Yet their struggle for self-worth and dignity, their dreams and hopes, poignantly demonstrate the power of the human will to survive.
The setting remains relevant today when one considers the lives and living conditions of refugees in refugee shelters. The play by Theater Atelier was created in collaboration with the theater’s acting studio. Professional actors and students share the stage. Native languages and learned German come together. Some speak with authentic accents because they came to Germany from eight different countries. This makes the production a unique intercultural experience with an inclusive aspect.

The ticket entitles the holder to travel to the venue via VVS public transportation (2nd class) starting 3 hours before the performance begins and to return by 5:00 a.m. the following day. The VVS ticket is non-transferable.
