The young Wagner countered the deaf ears that only wanted to hear "ordinary Italian ringing" in Bellini's bel canto drama by saying that he knew of no comparable "soul painting than that of this wild Gallic seeress, whom we see permeating all phases of passion". And indeed: with the priestess who serves her gods and therefore wants to remain chaste, who as a spiritual authority gives guidance to her subjugated people and at the same time stands by her love for one of the occupiers, even when he leaves her, Bellini portrays the stirring double life of a woman capable of love to the extreme - embodied by Kammersängerin Diana Haller in the revival of Jossi Wieler's and Sergio Morabito's acclaimed production.
