A simple country boy loves a well-read landowner’s daughter. She’d rather read. The desperate Nemorino is talked into buying the eponymous love potion—a nightshade of exceptional quality—from the miracle doctor and quack “Dulcamara” at an exorbitant price. Whether it’s due to the red wine or a sudden windfall—in the end, Adina and Nemorino find each other, and everything comes together in enchanting melodies and sheer merriment.
