Holocaust Memorial Day matinee at the House of History Baden-Württemberg
The House of Documentary Film (HDF) and the House of History (HdGBW) invite you to a film preview on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day 2026. We will be showing the experimental documentary "Holofiction" (102 min.) as part of a matinee.
In it, the German-Polish director Michal Kosakowski has assembled his own new work using archive images from more than 3,000 fictional film works that deal with the Holocaust. At the same time, he has created an artistic inventory of image motifs and scenic narratives that have been recurring for decades: Windows are smashed, suitcases left behind, wagon doors close, leather boots gleam, clouds of smoke billow from the chimneys. Watchtowers, barbed wire, sheepdogs. "Holofiction" describes the anatomy of the mass extermination of European Jews during the Nazi era in repetitive themes and camera angles.
For eight years, Michal Kosakowski combed through archives worldwide, viewed films and selected excerpts, which he reassembled in a breathless montage. A work that reflects iconographic image creations in a haunting way and invites us to reflect on the culture of remembrance and responsibility towards the past.
The Italian composer Paolo Marzocchi composed a congenial score for Kosakowski's gripping film narrative and recorded it with the WunderKammer Orchestra, which he founded.
"Holofiction" is expected to be released in German cinemas in April 2026. We will be showing the film as an exclusive preview and discussing his work with director Michal Kosakowski afterwards.
