“Saltbrennt” is when, in Tyrol, schnapps is distilled by hand from select apples, pears, and plums. It’s especially effective at preventing stomachaches and keeping arguments in check.
But “Saltbrennt” also refers to when four or five young Tyrolean musicians distill songs by hand from exquisite melodies and groovy rhythms using carefully selected instruments. And these songs work especially well for warding off bad moods and paying homage to the roots of the blues.
The Tyrolean band “Saltbrennt” has evolved into a song distillery that fills concert halls and recordings, imbuing every single distillate with its very own unique touch. Alongside the tuba, harmonica, drums, guitar, bass, piano, and four-part vocals, they serve up hearty lyrics, always refined with a touch of Austrian wit. Unvarnished and honest, down-to-earth and even a little funky—that’s how this thoroughly likable quartet (and sometimes quintet) presents its homemade Alpine groove blues. Without hiding their roots, Saltbrennt shatter common Tyrolean clichés and fill the resulting cracks with their own ideas. And those ideas can really pack a punch—especially in your ears. One thing is certain, though: After an evening with “Saltbrennt,” your belly feels pleasantly warm, your head is clear, your thoughts are buoyant, and your heart is as light as a feather.
