In Roland Schimmelpfennig’s new play, a family celebration becomes the setting for friction, constraints, desire, and unconscious destructive impulses. The power of the family and of old roles—into which one slips back, even as an adult—flashes up at times comically, at times menacingly, until the middle-class facade of the familiar home begins to crumble in an eerie way.
