Deception
Adania Shibli
Moderator: Lena Gorelik
Following her novel *A Minor Matter*, Palestinian author Adania Shibli presents her new novel, *Deception*—a story of two young people in Palestine. Scarred by the occupation and the failed peace plans of the 1990s, the two are repeatedly pushed to the margins of existence. Names, places, and dates are not mentioned; only the changing of the seasons bears witness to their inner turmoil. Trees, animals, and outcasts offer solace, while people’s dreams increasingly fade away. Adania Shibli tells of glances, gestures, and words that conceal more than they reveal, using language to make the pain of others tangible. Shibli, born in 1974 in Palestine, writes novels, plays, short stories, and essays. Her novel *A Minor Matter* (2022) has been translated into over forty languages and was nominated for the National Book Award (2020) and the International Booker Prize (2021). Adania Shibli lives in Palestine and Germany. “Deception” was translated from Arabic into German by Hartmut Fähndrich.
