Hans Zimmer has achieved something incredible: the German composer worked behind the scenes in Hollywood for decades, was barely visible to the general public - and yet is now as famous as a rock star. His outstanding soundtracks helped turn many films into blockbusters: from The Lion King and Gladiator to Interstellar and Dune.
Only one living film composer is as famous as he is: the great John Williams. The American was nominated an incredible 54 times for an Oscar - he won the prize five times - and there is probably no more famous melody in the entire history of film than his fanfare for Star Wars. These two composers have written a lot of brilliant music that everyone knows, that triggers nostalgic memories in moviegoers - and that creates strong emotions even without moving images.
