Umgeschichten: Erinnern jenseits von Nostalgie und Verdrängung

Location:
Theater Rampe (RAMPE), Filderstraße 47, 70180 Stuttgart
Date
November 16, 2025, 11:00 AM

A conversation with Thomas Oberender, Mandy Hildebrandt and Paulino José Miguel about the necessity of living post-GDR cultures of remembrance.

In his book "Empowerment Ost. How we grow together", Thomas Oberender takes a critical look at spaces and practices of remembrance after the fall of the Wall and comes to the conclusion that East German voices were systematically marginalized in the discourse on reunification.

In conversation with the author, Mandy Hildebrandt (teacher and political activist) and Paulino José Miguel (political scientist, educationalist and former GDR contract worker from Mozambique), moderated by Leyla Ercan, we will explore the question: How do we confront the (paternalistic) West German interpretative sovereignties in remembering reunification?

How can we think and remember reunification in a West German city like Stuttgart in order to give equal consideration to East German perspectives and realities of life in the present? And what form can political engagement take that arises from an empowered understanding of post-GDR history?

Following the discussions, there will be an opportunity to exchange ideas over a lunch snack

The event is part of the series "UMGESCHICHTEN - PERSPEKTIVEN AUF EINE TRANSFORMATIVE ERINNERUNGSKULTUR". A cooperation between RAMPE and the Coordination Office for Remembrance Culture of the Cultural Office of the City of Stuttgart.
