In *Four Sisters: Distant Vienna, Strange World*, author Ernst Strouhal navigates the boundaries between a historical essay, a family chronicle, a biography, and a novel, transforming this sweeping 20th-century family saga into an emotional and literary experience.
The four sisters of the Benedikt family—whose start in life could not have been better, given that they came from an art-loving, educated, assimilated Jewish upper class in Vienna—are at the heart of this novel. The rise of National Socialism brings this era to an abrupt, brutal end, and the resourceful young women are hurled into the world—from New York to Stockholm, London, and Zurich—where they try in various ways to survive and stay in touch with one another. They speak and think in different languages, live in a wide variety of cultures over the years, and, through their letters, create a new community that shows how people can preserve their identity despite displacement—and at what cost. Featuring, among others, Leslie Malton (The Great Bellheim)
