Lecture by Dr. Csilla Schell, Freiburg In the accompanying program of the exhibition REVIVAL(S). Cultural revivals in Transdanubia

The changes in the East Central European countries around 1990 transformed not only the political and economic foundations but also the annual cycle of festivals. What followed the abolition of the socialist festival calendar is often referred to as the 'festivalization boom'.

The ethnographers at the Institute for Cultural Analysis of Germans in Eastern Europe (IKDE) in Freiburg observed and investigated this exciting cultural negotiation process of German-Hungarian local culture with open eyes. They asked which new local celebrations, festivities and local customs have emerged or been taken up again in these almost 40 years. Which 'new traditions' have been 'invented' and, if marketed well, may even have become a local brand?

The lecture by Dr. Csilla Schell offers insights into Hungary's new, colorful local festival and custom culture. It is enriched by photographs from the speaker's field research.
