The beautiful and clever Viola, twin sister of Sebastian, has been separated from her brother in a shipwreck and comes ashore in Illyria. There she decides to go into service with the noble Duke Orsino, but disguised as a man under the name Cesario. Duke Orsino takes a liking to the young nobleman Cesario/Viola and sends him as a messenger of love to the rich Countess Olivia, for whom Orsino pines in love but has not yet been requited. Viola/Cesario, who has fallen head over heels in love with Duke Orsino, naturally finds such errands to the countess extremely unpleasant. And when the otherwise inaccessible Countess Olivia falls in love with the love messenger Cesario/Viola, things seem to go round in circles. What's more, Malvolio, the countess's steward, also pines for Countess Olivia and is encouraged to do so by a letter forged by the servants. Feste, the countess's jester, and her uncle Sir Toby Rülps and his friend Sir Andrew Bleichewang have fun with Malvolio.

While Viola / Cesario has rejected Countess Olivia in horror in her desire for love, Viola's twin brother, the brash Sebastian, who has also come to Illyria, runs into the rich Countess Olivia and is now mistaken for Cesario / Viola.

A cheerful, lively game of identities and fake identities takes its course...
