Armenian literature is one of the oldest in the world and is inextricably linked to Armenia's turbulent history: from the heyday of the kingdom to the adoption of Christianity and the defense against foreign powers to dispersion, subjugation, genocide and resurrection. A literature rich in pathos and poetry, tenderness and irony, longing and humor emerged from these historical areas of tension.
In her lecture, Dr. Elena Konson will guide us through two millennia of Armenian poetry - from the hymns of Mesrop Mashtots and the chronicles of Movses Khorenatsi to the modern voices of the worldwide diaspora. It becomes clear how strongly literature has contributed to the survival of Armenian identity and how it connects past and present.
Elena Konson comes from St. Petersburg, where she studied piano pedagogy and art history and worked as a piano teacher and museum guide at the Hermitage. After studying literature and musicology at the Ruhr University in Bochum, she now teaches literature, music, cultural and art history.
