Regional history comes to life in the museum on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße. Original exhibits in lavishly designed rooms illustrate the impact of major events and developments on a small scale, how people experienced political change and technological progress, war and peace, hardship and prosperity.

Why are there tiny, 200-year-old bread rolls in a display case? Why is the sight of children playing happily on a film from the Nazi era so depressing? The permanent exhibition shows unusual, important and new things about south-west Germany. Regular special exhibitions take a fresh look at historical topics.

A walk-through map begins an impressive journey through the state's history since 1790 - across the shaky ground of the revolutionary era, through the German Empire, along the fates of the world wars and National Socialism to personalities who are committed to co-determination and democracy today.

The theme park shows the many facets of the country. Real fir trees harbour the history of the Black Forest. Giant travelling trunks tell of immigration and emigration. Family photos from 160 years ago show ‘private views’. The newest part of the theme park presents a whole cosmos of science.
